The Burrito Lab on East University Avenue announced its upcoming closure via a Facebook post last week. The final day of the storefront and food truck’s operation will be June 12.
First opening in July 2024, The Burrito Lab’s offerings include burritos, salads with unlimited toppings and walking tacos, all with an emphasis on free guacamole. The restaurant opened a food truck in Fall 2025 with a similar menu and philosophy.
“This decision wasn’t easy, and we want to express our deepest gratitude to every person who has supported us,” wrote the restaurant in its post. “The Champaign-Urbana community showed us incredible love, support, and belief in what we were building from day one. Without you, we simply wouldn’t be here.”
The post directed readers to more of the owners’ food ventures. La Michoacana on Wheels, a dessert food truck typically parked at CSL Plasma on Kirby Avenue, began service in April. The post also announced the upcoming arrival of Los Comales, a restaurant “featuring a brand-new Mexican flavor concept,” that will open later this year at the intersection of Springfield and Kenwood in West Champaign.
“While this chapter closes, our story together continues in exciting new ways [and] we’re thrilled to introduce you to the next phase of our family’s journey,” the post read.
Before The Burrito Lab opened in the 209 E University Avenue location, the spot was occupied by MeetFresh — a Taiwanese-inspired tea and dessert chain.
The closure of The Burrito Lab comes as the East University Avenue corridor continues to develop. Bombay Market opened a large Indian-focused store and eatery one block to the west in late 202. Boneyard Boulders, a climbing gym from the owners of Urbana Boulders, opened last year. The soon-to-be vacancy at 209 E University Ave. leaves a four block gap heading east on the busy street without any restaurants.
